KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Long-time Kalamazoo civil rights advocate and community volunteer Anna Whitten has died.
Whitten had served on the Kalamazoo Valley Community College board for a quarter century and have served on a long list of other organizations and non-profits in the community, including Loaves and Fishes, the Ecumenical Center, Lift, The Family Health Center and the Kalamazoo Valley Museum.
Anna Whitten Hall is named in her honor at KVCC’s downtown campus.
“Anna Whitten was more than a legend in Southwest Michigan, she had the biggest heart and passion for so many in our community – particularly the most vulnerable,” Congressman Fred Upton said in a statement. “She demanded the very best and held us all accountable. We, indeed, have all lost a friend.”
Whitten was 95.
