PORTAGE (WKZO-AM) — Portage may be the next city in Michigan to recognize gay rights.
They wouldn’t be the first. In fact, 40 other Michigan towns have already beaten them to that milestone.
There was a lot of support Thursday for passage of an ordinance in Portage to protect the LGBTQ community from discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodation. Portage’s human services board took public comment. A number of residents spoke in favor of the proposal and none expressed opposition.
Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Oshtemo and Kalamazoo Township have approved similar ordinances.
If all goes as planned, a final draft of the proposed ordinance will be recommended by the Human Services Board on June 2, and then put on the following Portage City Council agenda on June 14.
