LANSING (WKZO-AM) — People of all ages who share drugs would be exempted from prosecution if they report a friend having an overdose under legislation that cleared the House this week.
In too many cases, rather than get into trouble drug abusers have walked away or fail to seek help for the overdose victim. It happened to Mason Mizwiki during a New Year’s Eve party. He lived in Rep. Al Pscholka’s district.
Rather than face prosecution, his friends let him die.
That prompted Pscholka, R-Stevensville, to propose what he calls his “Good Samaritan Law.” The latest version approved by the House extends the protection to all age groups. Pscholka said it will be Mizwiki’s legacy if and when it begins to save lives.
The original only applied to residents under 21.
The legislation now heads for the Senate for their consideration.
