KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller is urging increased boater safety after the body of a 39-year-old man was pulled from Gull Lake over the Memorial Day weekend.
Danyelle Phillips jumped into the water to rescue his son Saturday. The child was fine, but Phillips’ body wouldn’t be found until Sunday.
Fuller says life jackets could have prevented the tragedy.
“When I was growing up we lived on a lake for about 10 years of my life and we never wore a life jacket,” Fuller said. “That’s just not what people are used to, but that’s something we need to start talking more about.”
Phillips was not wearing a life jacket when he made that plunge.
Fuller said the marine patrol will be out all summer alerting boaters about how to stay safe on the water.
