HASTINGS (WKZO-AM) — The Barry County Sheriff’s Office says a quick-thinking corrections officer was able to keep an inmate from committing suicide on Wednesday evening.
They said Dep. Mike Hanger was alerted to a possible suicide attempt on Wednesday. He responded to the housing unit and found an inmate with a discolored face hanging from a sheet tied to their bunk.
The deputy was able to lift the inmate, remove the sheet and restore the inmate’s ability to breathe.
The inmate regained consciousness and was taken to Spectrum Pennock Hospital for a check-up. After an all-clear was given by doctors, the inmate was returned to jail.
Jails have a protocol for dealing with possibly suicidal inmates that includes special clothing, frequent checks and other prevention measures.
