OSHTEMO (WKZO-AM) — Two people were seriously injured and another critically hurt when their vehicles were struck in the rear by a tractor-trailer Saturday afternoon on U.S. 131 near Stadium Drive.
Three vehicles were involved, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office.
A minivan and an SUV where headed southbound on U.S. 131 toward a construction zone just before 4 p.m. when the faster moving tractor-trailer struck the back of the SUV with enough force to propel it into the minivan ahead.
Rescue crews had to cut the victims out of the wreckage. One person from the minivan and two from the SUV were rushed to the hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
The collision and the investigation that followed closed the highway for four hours.
No names have been released. The truck driver was reportedly distracted by a mechanical issue and could face citations or charges.
