KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The youngest survivor of Kalamazoo’s mass-shooting in February has a MRSA infection that has impacted the 3D-printed plastic plate installed to cover the the portion of her that was damaged by gunfire.
MRSA is a vaccine-resistant staph infection that occurs occassionally after patients have had invasive surgeries, like the one Abigail had to undergo. The news was delivered by Dr. Gregory Wiggins of Bronson Methodist Hospital.
Surgeons removed the plate that was in her head Monday. That means she will be wearing a helmet through the summer to protect her head. It may also mean the 14-year-old probably will not be returning to Harper Creek Middle School in the fall as she hoped.
They will insert a new plate in about three months.
Kopf was the only person to survive the attack at the Cracker Barrel restaurant in Texas Township. Five were gunned down, allegedly by 45-year-old Jason Dalton.
