KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — State Sen. John Proos, R-St. Joseph, says he’ll look for legislative options to make Michigan roads safer for everyone after a pickup drove into a group of bicyclists in Cooper Township last Tuesday, killing five and injuring four others.
Proos said the collision has prompted reflection.
“I rode with my kids last night,” Proos said. “I had my 9-year-old in behind me and my 14-year-old in front of me and we all had helmets, but so did these folks.”
He said he’ll now consider lobbying for roads with more-accommodating shoulders.
“Perhaps there are some solutions that give a better chance at safety, but it sounds like it wouldn’t have mattered even if we had an eight-foot bike lane,” Proos said.
Gov. Rick Snyder said Sunday additional bike lanes are a part of his “compete streets” initiative
