ORIGINAL STORY:
GENEVA TOWNSHIP (WKZO-AM) — Police have surrounded a home in rural Van Buren County where an armed and barricaded gunman has been holed up since mid-morning after he was confronted by a detective over an alleged threat to a local public official.
Reportedly, the man fired a rifle into the ground near the detective, then ran back inside.
Michigan State Police and Van Buren County Sheriff’s deputies have shut off traffic near the home at 60th Street and 4th Avenue, just south of Lacota. There were several exchanges of gunfire during the dinner hour.
Troopers said they had been in phone contact with the man, but he has been uncooperative.
Police say they are trying to resolve the matter peacefully if they can, but the man may have been hit in one of the earlier gunfights. They have not been able to raise him on the phone for several hours.
