KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — There are updates on the two survivors from Kalamazoo’s mass-shooting in February.
The organizers of Sunday’s Juneteenth Celebration at Western Michigan University have dedicated it to Tiana Carruthers, the young mother and hero who shielded children from a gunman. She testified last week at the preliminary hearing of Jason Dalton, the alleged gunman. A portion of the proceeds from the event will go to help the 25-year-old recover.
On June 19th of 1865, slaves in Texas learned Abraham Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation. They were set free afterward.
Meanwhile, the recovery of Abigail Kopf, 14, has been set back by an infection following her surgery to install a plate in her skull. She had hoped to return to Harper Creek Middle School in the fall, but that will not be possible now.
Instead, the family has announced plans on her Facebook recovery page to have her tutored at home in the fall.
