HARTFORD, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Hartford Public Schools Board of Education announced Tuesday that it has voted 6-1 to retire its Indian mascot by the end of the 2021-2022 school year.
That comes after an announcement earlier this month, when officials said they were beginning the process to do so.
The decision was made with consideration of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, whose input was weighed with a public comment session.
Tribal Council Chairwoman Rebecca Richards also wrote a letter, which was read during the meeting.
Going forward, a student-led process will begin to help select a new name. That process will also include input from the community and other stakeholders.
