TEXAS TOWNSHIP (WKZO-AM) — Despite the threat of some heavy weather, large numbers turned out for the Annual KalTour bicycle ride Sunday morning, many riding in memorial for the bike riders who died earlier this month on North Westnedge Avenue.
The Kalamazoo Bicycle Club has announced that 100 percent of the proceeds are being donated to the Kalamazoo Strong Organization for distribution to the families of the nine victims of that crash.
Riders could choose from a variety of distances, from a 15-mile family ride to a 100-mile challenge.
The club provided a number of scheduled stops along the route for restroom breaks, water, snacks and recruited area bike shops to provide mechanical support, patrolling the route, watching for flat tires, bent rims and other issues.
The event was staged at the Bronson Health Club near Kalamazoo Valley Community College’s main campus in Texas Township. The route took riders along rural roads in Kalamazoo and Van Buren Counties in a big loop.
Rachel Kaiser with Kalamazoo Strong said bike organizations all over the nation and the world also staged bike events to coincide with the Kaltour and are dedicating their proceeds to the victims in Kalamazoo.
