KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller says boaters can expect a greater number of sheriff’s deputies on county lakes through the Independence Day weekend.
Fuller says there will be a focus on deterring drunken boating.
“We want people to realize that if you’re drinking alcohol and driving a boat you could put yourself in line for an arrest,” Fuller said. “There is such a thing as drunk boating.”
He also says sheriff’s deputies will provide some education this weekend.
“People are not wearing the life jackets they should be, and that’s one of the things we try to address on the lakes,” Fuller said.
The U.S. Coast Guard says there were 90 boating accidents in Michigan last year. 22 were fatal.
