MELVINDALE, MICHIGAN (WKZO-AM) — A fiery display of another kind this 4th of July weekend rocked Melvindale, Michigan early Saturday morning.
Police Chief Chad Hayse says a suspected drunk driver went off the road and hit a natural gas main.
The resulting explosion was seen and felt for miles, as far away as Canada, shattering windows in nearby homes.
Utility crews were able to cut off the gas quickly enough but the residual gas in the pipeline burned for a while, melting the siding off homes and setting a nearby building on fire.
The fire forced an 18-block evacuation that lasted 6 hours.
Somehow the wayward driver survived the blast. His condition has not been released.
No one else was hurt
