SOUTH HAVEN (WKZO-AM) — Michigan State Police had to be called in to help reestablish peace after several violent altercations forced the evacuation of thousands from North Beach in South Haven just prior to the start of the city’s “Light Up The Lake” fireworks show.
At least three people suffered injuries late Sunday, including an officer with the South Haven Police Department. The officer was not seriously hurt.
It’s still not clear what prompted the outburst of violence.
Recurring problems with alcohol and drugs forced the city to increase the police presence near the lakeshore before the start of the annual event.
