LANSING (WKZO-AM) — The timing couldn’t have been the worse for a “Fill the Boot” campaign in Texas Township to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
They did not know it when they scheduled the campaign, but It was to begin just days after Attorney General Bill Schuette issued an opinion that wading out into traffic to get donations is actually a civil infraction.
The fundraiser has now been canceled. Now, they are looking for another way to raise the $20,000 they expected to get during the three-day drive.
The attorney general’s opinion came in response to a township that actually outlawed the practice in Michigan’s thumb.
Schuette said that it not only applies to charities, but panhandlers as well.
Unless a court rules otherwise, Schuette’s opinion carries the weight of law.
The fire department in Portage has also canceled its drive.
