KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Thousands turned out on a perfect day in La Crone Park for the ninth-annual Ultimate Family Reunion for the food, the music, the basketball, and the access to information about area agencies and services.
Sponsored by the Mothers for Hope, it was designed to bring together low-income families and the myriad of agencies that may be able to improve their lives, and do it in a park party atmosphere.
Entertainment ranged from a disc jockey spinning old-school soul, to local bands, to the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra.
At the same time in a park in Portage, a very different event was held that also had a unity theme.
The Kalamazoo County’s Republican Party held their post-primary unity event Saturday at Westfield Park.
The events are held to heal any wounds, reunite and reorganize now the vote has been taken and a slate of candidates has been selected for the fall ballot.
That is a tougher than usual nut to crack this year because of the great divide that now exists within the Republican Party and the members who are trying to sort out their loyalties.
Party officials are doing their best to hold it all together. County Chairman Scott McGraw says he remains loyal to the party and if Donald Trump is the candidate who gained enough delegates in the primary process to win the nomination, then that’s who he is supporting for President.
But the traditional party leaders were not in Cleveland and we didn’t see any of the major local candidates at the unity picnic on Saturday either.
