GALESBURG, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Due to ongoing issues related to COVID-19, the Galesburg-Augusta Community Schools district will cancel classes on two days next week, which will create an extended Thanksgiving break.
In a Facebook post, district officials explained that the ongoing pandemic has caused a disproportionate amount of illnesses in both students and staff, on top of being understaffed to begin with.
The district says the number of absences due to COVID is rising, and classes have sometimes had to be combined.
As a result, classes next Monday, November 22 and Tuesday, November 23 will be canceled, which will lead into the Thanksgiving break.
“We believe that this longer break from the classroom, a total of nine days, will provide an opportunity to do a thorough cleanse of our school buildings and give time for staff and students to get well,” Galesburg-Augusta Superintendent Wendy Maynard-Somers wrote. “Our goal is that come Monday, Nov 29, 2021, when we return to the classrooms, we will be fully staffed, students’ attendance will be closer to 100%, and we can focus on teaching and learning.”
Next Monday and Tuesday, childcare will still be available and athletic programs will still be in place.
