KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The smokestack at the old Gibson Guitar plant is being taken down…not demolished but deconstructed brick by brick which will be saved and reconstructed.
It’s phase one of a project by PlazaCorp to renovate the entire property. Right now they fear the smoke stack isn’t safe in its current condition, and they plan a fundraising campaign to restore it.
The bigger plan is to restore the historic guitar factory, which is currently the home of Heritage Guitars, offer public tours, add a historic display area, an educational venue and retail and entertainment spaces.
There have been a lot of Iconic rock stars and musicians who have been through the front doors of the plant to see their own guitars being built.
PlazaCorp is the same operation that restored the Globe Building and the old Shakespeare plant.
They are currently converting a portion of the historic train station for a Hopcat and a Sushi restaurant.
