KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Public School Officials say its vital that children get a COVID-19 vaccine as the fourth wave of cases is hitting the state, and several other Schools Districts in Michigan are taking a hit by the virus.
Hopkins Public Schools were closed yesterday and will be closed again today after 60 COVID-19 cases were identified. Pennfield Schools near Battle Creek went back to virtual learning yesterday after an outbreak among bus drivers. Newaygo Schools also shut down this week.
Superintendent Rita Raichoudhuri says they are hosting a few vaccination clinics, but she says there are now lots of places where the shots are available for everyone who is 5 years old or older. School Trustees uniformly endorsed continuing the district’s mask mandate during the second trimester and urged parents to do all they can to keep their children protected.
Since fall term began there have been 100’s of outbreaks connected to schools in Michigan with thousands of confirmed cases. Schools are the largest source of new outbreaks in the state. Kalamazoo County’s Mask Mandate for children aged 5 to 12 is scheduled to be lifted on December 17, at least for now, but the KPS staff and students will keep their masks on through winter.
