LANSING (WKZO-AM) — Thursday was the last day of the fall session of the Michigan House before the November election, but it wasn’t too late for Rep. Jon Hoadley, D-Kalamazoo, to reintroduce legislation that would create a registry for dangerous dogs.
A recent mauling in Kalamazoo’s Edison Neighborhood left a man barely able to use his hands and arms.
Hoadley said his bill would require that animals with a violent history, like that dog, be put in a registry.
“Postal carriers or deliverymen could check to locate the dangerous dogs in a neighborhood, and if the owners end up being irresponsible, in allowing those dogs to get out and harm others, then they can be held accountable,” Hoadley said.
He concedes it may be a little late this session to introduce new bills, but also said he would like to get the conversation started now and then if they have to be reintroduced next year then so be it.
Hoadley said it would not be breed specific, instead focusing on behavior.
