KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Rep. John Bizon says he’s pleased by the progress of legislation that would subject the governor and the legislature to public records requests.
Bizon, R-Battle Creek, is pleasantly surprised. He was expecting the legislation to quickly die after its introduction.
“I was expecting it go to some committee to just be ignored, but it wasn’t” Bizon said. “There was significant interest in the bills, and they blossomed. They had hearings and improved on them.”
Bizon said he felt compelled to put the legislation together after polling constituants.
If passed by the Senate and signed by the governor, Bizon says the 10-bill package would increase government transparency, which Michigan ranked last in during a 2015 survey by the Center for Public Integrity and Global Integrity.
Michigan is one of only two states to exempt its governor and legislature from public records laws.
