KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — In a light drizzle, a vigil was held Friday evening in Bronson Park to remember the children who have lost their lives to Cancer and to pray for the ones who are still fighting.
Some hopeful news came out of the event. Congressman Fred Upton announced to the crowd huddling under umbrellas that his long sought comprehensive 21st Century Cures package will finally get a vote that could send it to the White House.
He says it passed the U.S. House last year. The Senate will take it up as soon as they meet next.
The Package includes increased funding for both federal and private research organizations and for Vice-President Joe Biden’s “Cancer Moonshot”.
The most controversial part of the package streamlines the approval process for new drugs and medical devices. While that is being called ‘pork’ by some critics, it helps local firms like Pfizer, Stryker and Perrigo, and should help the local economy.
Time is running out on the legislation.
