SOUTH HAVEN (WKZO-AM) — They have unveiled the freshly-painted South Haven Lighthouse after a $300,000 restoration project on the exterior and interior of the historic landmark in the lake shore community.
The money was all raised through community donations.
A crowd gathered on the pier for the Friday morning event.
Amanda Creeden, President of the Local Historical Society, said interior restoration was completed in the spring but it will be a while before the interior will be available for tours.
She says the lighthouse is “that one thing that everyone knows about, a very visible part of their community that everyone visits when they return.” She said an official rededication is planned for next spring.
The 114-year-old steel structure, which is splashed and battered regularly by Lake Michigan, was in need of repairs when the community took the project on.
