KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Two men have been arraigned after a raid on a home in the 200 block of North Street Thursday. Three others remain under investigation and could also face charges next week on a variety of drug related counts.
Nero Wade-Campbell of Kalamazoo and Juwan Hemphill of Detroit were arraigned on Friday. Hemphill made bail but Wade-Campbell remained in Jail at this writing.
Acting on tips that several “Gang Members” from Detroit had set up a heroin distribution operation in Kalamazoo, the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team raided the home, and found four Detroit men in the home with Wade-Campbell.
According to the news release, they “found a distribution amount of heroin, heroin packaged for sale, marijuana, ammunition, a large amount of US currency believed to be the proceeds for narcotic sales and items used in the packaging and distribution of narcotics.”
Two of the five were arrested on a variety of drug charges. The two others were not arrested but “asked to promptly return to Detroit”. Charges against some or all of them are pending.
Capt. Dave Boysen says they have stepped up their investigation into the heroin trade because of a recent spike in overdoses in the community.
Because I-94 is considered to be a major trafficking route between Chicago and Detroit, and because Kalamazoo is halfway between the two, Capt. Boysen says drug dealers sometimes stop and try to expand their market here.
