KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Usually, when we watch live bouts from Las Vegas, it’s a boxing match and its pay-per-view. Tonight, it will be the third and final debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
Some have described the first two Presidential debates as ‘slug-fests,’ and there has been no indication that tonight’s rematch will be any different.
The pundits have been saying that the only way Donald Trump will win one of these debates is if he stopped being Donald Trump and tried being more presidential, but Western Michigan University Political Science Professor John Clark says, if anything he has done the opposite.
“He’s unshackled now and feels he can say and do whatever he wants as a candidate and doesn’t fully understand that there are potential repercussions from that,” Clark said.
Clark said Trump has been using a strategy first employed by Karl Rove. When your base of support isn’t as big as your opponent’s base, go after your opponent’s base and shore up your own.
“His attacks on Hillary have had that effect to some extent, but I think his challenge is that he hasn’t been able to solidify his Republican base,” Clark said.
Clark also said going after Paul Ryan and other GOP Leaders has not helped Trump.
Clinton goes into tonight’s debate ahead on points. Her strategy tonight will probably be to stay on her toes, dance around the ring, deflect any haymakers thrown her way by Trump and stay out of trouble.
If she can run out the clock, she will win, Clark said. She has nothing to gain by getting into a street fight with Trump.
WKZO-AM will carry the debate live at 9 p.m.
