DEARBORN (WKZO-AM) — The experts say that the completion of repairs and maintenance at the BP Oil Refinery in Whiting, Ind., is the reason gas prices are falling in the Great Lakes states as the work week begins.
We can’t guarantee they will stay there, but gas prices have slipped back below the $2 mark at a few gas stations in Kalamazoo. GasBuddy.com says the average price for a gallon of regular is $1.99, with some stations selling fuel for as low as $1.90.
Both AAA Michigan and National Pollster Trilby Lundberg say the refinery issues in the Midwest and the restoration of the Colonial Pipeline, which feeds the east coast, both have had a positive effect on the nation’s average. She says we are also in a low-demand season.
Nationally, the price stands at $2.25 a gallon, a four cent drop in the last two weeks, according to Lundberg’s bimonthly survey.
AAA says Michigan has seen a 12-cent drop in the last week to $2.12 on average.
Lundberg said the lowest prices in the U.S. can be found in Tulsa, Okla., in the heart of the oil patch, at $1.95 per gallon. That’s just a few cents lower than it is at some stations in West Michigan on Monday.
