PORTAGE (WKZO-AM) — While many elected officials will be running for reelection this weekend, hitting phone banks and front porches, Portage State Senator Margaret O’ Brien will be hitting the pavement in Washington D.C. running in the Marine Corps Marathon.
O’Brien, who chairs the Michigan Senate Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, says she is running to raise awareness for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
She says not only the public needs to know more about it, but servicemen who may be suffering from it but don’t know it.
O’Brien has been training for ithe marathon for months with her Democratic Vice-Chair, Sen. David Knezek a war veteran who has lost several friends to suicide because of PTSD.
Ironically now Knezek may not be able to run because he suffered a stress fracture in his foot a few weeks back while practicing. She says he is day to day.
O’Brien says she hasn’t run a marathon in 17-years.
