RICHLAND TOWNSHIP (WKZO-AM) — Five people were taken to area hospitals for treatment after a fiery wreck in Richland Township Friday afternoon. Their names and conditions have not been released.
Kalamazoo County Deputies say it appears that a young man driving a red sedan was going too fast to handle a curve in the 5700 block of 32nd Street, crossed the centerline and struck a mini-van head on.
There were four members of the same family inside that van.
Emergency crews were dispatched just after 3 p.m. but before they got there, motorists on the scene, including a volunteer firefighter who was headed home from his day job rushed to help the occupants of the two vehicles.
They scrounged up fire extinguishers from nearby buildings and other vehicles to contain the flames coming from the engine department of the red sedan, until fire rescue personel were able to take over the crash scene.
All five victims had to be pried out of the wreckage. The crash remains under investigation.
