KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Public Schools is asking for public input on how to spend extra federal funding to undo some of the damage done by the pandemic. The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief, or “ESSER” funding, is for all students with an emphasis on at-risk kids. It aims to support mental health and social services, make up for lost instruction time, and improve ventilation systems in schools.
“While returning to in-person learning is clear evidence of progress, we know that many of our students still require additional academic and social emotional support. We would like to hear from parents, KPS employees and union leaders, secondary students, representatives from civil rights organizations, and other community partners and the community-at-large.” – Superintendent Rita Raichoudhuri
Anyone with ideas can find a survey at the Kalamazoo Public Schools website. Parents, staff members, and local organizations were sent a copy. The deadline to comment online is this Sunday at midnight.
