LANSING (WKZO-AM) — Michigan health officials are kicking off an awareness campaign in Lansing to mark American Diabetes Month.
They say ignorance about the disease may be the thing that makes it the most dangerous. One in every ten Michigan adult has been diagnosed with type-2 Diabetes.
State Health Dept. Spokesperson Jennifer Eisner says pre-diabetes is one of the real target of the campaign, its estimated that 2.6-million Michiganders are pre-diabetic and can avoid the disease itself with a few simple lifestyle changes.
They are proposing more exercise on your schedule and more veggies on your plate.
They say losing weight is a good way to also avoid contracting the full blown disease, which can cause heart attacks, strokes and other life-threatening medical emergencies.
Diabetes is like any other chronic disease it will require treatment, testing, constant attention and will likely shorten the lives of its victims anyway. It’s worth avoiding.
