KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Representatives with the Michigan branch of ESCAPE say now is the perfect time to get ovens clean in advance of the Thanksgiving holiday.
“If we have a lot of build-up of previous cooking, splatter and things like that, that can become an ignition source,” Michael McLeieer, who is with fire-prevention and safety agency, said.
Thanksgiving is also the leading holiday for unattended kitchen fires. McLeieer said it’s wise to have a responsible adult always near the oven on the big day.
“Sometimes, we’re toying between the parade or the football game while cooking,” McLeieer said. “That’s when disasters can happen.
He’s also urging families to keep children at least three feet away from the cooking area.
