RICHLAND (WKZO-AM) — A Wayne State University Police Officer shot and killed in the line of duty this week was originally from Kalamazoo County. Officer Collin Rose is a native of Richland, where his parents still live.
He was a graduate of Gull Lake High School.
Friends of his family in Richland are passing out blue lightbulbs for homeowners to put in their front porch lights, as a salute to Officer Rose.
Family friend Tim Sampey says the 29-year-old had a warm personality describing him as a jokester who was always smiling.
Officer Collin Rose had worked for the department for 5 years. As a K-9 officer, he and his Rottweiler partner Clyde had patrolled campus since 2013, specializing in narcotics detection.
Rose was engaged to be married next year.
Rose stopped a bicyclist for questioning on Tuesday and a second officer found him on the ground with a head wound a short time later. He was investigating several reports of thefts in the neighborhood.
Police arrested 31-year-old DeAngelo Davis about three hours after the shooting and say he is a suspect in the case.
Gov. Rick Snyder says he was “deeply saddened” by the death of Collin Rose. Snyder offered his thoughts and prayers in a press release, saying the five-year veteran was well-respected by colleagues and his community. Attorney General Bill Schuette issued similar condolences late Wednesday.
A GoFundMe account has been established to raise money for the family.
