ALLEGAN COUNTY (WKZO-AM) — Christmas came a little early for homeowners in Salem Township in Allegan County.
They have received an $800,000 FEMA grant to build two tornado shelters at the Sandy Pines Campground and to add two tornado sirens to alert campers and homeowners in the area when life threatening weather is blowing through.
As this summer’s twisters demonstrated…it can happen in Allegan County. The Salem Township Board applied for the grant.
The sirens will be located at the Camp and St. Mary’s Visitation School, and can be heard for up to two miles away, which means part of Dorr Township will also be able to get the warning.
The tornado shelters will be designed to withstand up to an EF-4..that’s a twister pumping out 250mph winds. Campers are particularly vulnerable in tornadic storms.
