OAKLAND COUNTY (WKZO-AM) — Foster children will be the beneficiaries of Operation Good Cheer this holiday season.
5,733 foster children are participating this year. They were asked to create a Christmas wish list with six gift ideas.
Donors bought and wrapped the gifts which were dropped off at local offices. This weekend volunteers went around and collected them from 28 local Child and Family Service offices including in Berrien, Cass, Hillsdale, Kalamazoo, and Van Buren counties.
17,200 gifts were transported to Oakland County International Airport for sorting and loading by volunteers at a hanger hosted by Pentastar Aviation.
The gifts were then loaded onto planes participating in the Spirit of Good Cheer Flight to 25 airports and various ground destinations for final distribution to local agencies, who will deliver them to the foster children sometime before Christmas.
It’s the 46th year for the gift-giving effort in Michigan.
