KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Legislation passed during the lame duck session is on the governor’s desk that supporters say will boost organ donations in Michigan.
It’s called “Lauren’s Law,” named after a 9-year-old girl from New York who had to be placed on life support while waiting for a heart transplant.
“Lauren’s Law insists that the Secretary of State ask you personally when you get your driver’s license renewed whether you’ll participate in the gift of life for organ donation,” Sen. John Proos, R-St. Joseph, said on Monday. “We know that, when you have a personal ask, people actually participate.”
Proos is the lead sponsor of the bill.
Donor rolls in New York have increased since passage of a similar law in that state. Lawmakers renewed the legislation there in February.
