LANSING (WKZO-AM) — A pair of bills are on the governor’s desk that supporters say will ban the sale of aborted fetuses and fetal tissue in Michigan.
This despite federal law already existing making the sale of body parts illegal. Sen. John Proos, R-St. Joseph, co-sponsored the legislation in the Michigan Senate.
He says violators could spend up to five years in prison. “If you have an elective abortion, then there should never be profiteering from those baby body parts,” Proos said.
The bills were introduced amid claims last year that Planned Parenthood was selling the tissue of aborted fetuses. The agency denied profiteering claims, but did say some of its affiliates were taking part in tissue donation programs.
None of those participating health centers are in Michigan.
A pair of state investigations found that Planned Parenthood affiliates in Michigan were not mishandling fetal remains.
