IONIA COUNTY, MI (WZKO AM/FM) – A man accused of robbing a convenience store in Ionia County with a katana and injuring a store clerk has been arraigned in court, according to an update from police Monday.
Previously, police were investigating the attack, which is said to have taken place Sunday morning.
Sheriff’s deputies say the 36-year-old man was dressed in black when he entered the store in Easton Township around 11:45.
The suspect had attempted to tie the doors shut from outside using a rope. When a clerk approached him, the suspect stabbed him several times before taking cigarettes and money and running away.
Deputies later located the suspect in a farm field off Haynor Road and he was arrested after a short standoff.
The clerk was taken to a hospital with severe cuts to his face and neck.
On Monday, the suspect was identified as 36-year-old Jonathan Richard Wroten.
Wroten is being held on charges of assault with intent to commit murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, armed robbery and four counts of resisting and obstructing police officers.
He was denied bond and remains in custody at this time.
The victim in this case is said to have been released from an area hospital and is now recovering at home.
