KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Grand Rapids won’t have a ball drop this New Year’s Eve. The local organization says it could no longer attract big enough crowds, so there will be no big community event there.
For the 31st straight year, Kalamazoo will have New Year’s Fest this weekend.
The reason it has survived is because there is so much variety that it never gets stale.
Organizer Deb Droppers says they have comedians, musical groups, jugglers and even a guy who makes bubbles.
She says they have millennials who have grown up with New Year’s fest who begin the night there and end it at a party some place, returning at midnight for the ball drop and the fireworks.
She says what makes it different is that it’s a family friendly venue, and that has made it an annual tradition for many families, and it’s been around long enough to be into second generations.
Buttons are $5 and they are available at any Harding’s in the area. They can also be purchased online and there is a phone app that will let you plan out your evening.http://www.newyearsfest.com/
