KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Kalamazoo man has been sentenced to prison time after causing the death of his 6-year-old stepson last year, according to an update from WOOD TV Monday.
Previously, police were investigating the death of 6-year-old Jaylen Worthington, who died in December 2020 after complications from trauma.
Detectives determined that the injuries were caused by Latravion Heard-McMillon, who was identified as Worthington’s step-father.
After his arrest, it was determined there was insufficient evidence to show Heard-McMillon had the intent to murder Worthington.
As a result, charges of open murder and first degree child abuse were dropped. Heard-McMillon was then set to face charges of third degree child abuse and manslaughter.
According to the update Monday, Heard-McMillon has been sentenced to a maximum of 15 years in prison.
He had previously pleaded guilty to those charges in June.
