HASTINGS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan State Police have released the identity of the suspect of a shooting in Barry County.
According to police, Steven David Shumann died after troopers shot him during a hostage situation in Orangeville Township Wednesday, October 13.
Authorities say the 40-year-old Barry County man had been sought by state police for absconding parole for felonious assault.
At the time of the incident, troopers saw a woman riding in Shumann’s car when they approached. Shumann then pulled out a weapon deeming the incident a hostage situation by police.
Shumann was then shot by two troopers and the hostage did receive injuries during the process.
The case is expected to be sent to a third party for review of the officers’ actions.
