KALAMAZOO MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers began closing the homeless encampment on Ampersee St. early Wednesday.
Several cars and officers entered the site and began to evict those who were there.
One resident told WKZO news that those who lived there were told by officers that they had just a few minutes to get their belongings and leave.
In addition, a few arrests of those with outstanding warrants were made as well.
Many of those who were at the encampment were noticeably upset, some shouting obscenities at the officers who were there.
It is not known why the city decided to clear the site today.
City officials had planned on clearing the area after expressing concerns last month about safety and health there.
The site is a former industrial location that was used as a dump site for fly ash from a coal-fired power plant, and was under the jurisdiction of the city’s Brownfield Redevelopment Authority.
