UNDATED, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — U-Haul International has announced that they will no longer hire workers who use nicotine products in 21 states, including Michigan.
The company, which is based in Phoenix, AZ, made the announcement via press release on December 30th.
Arizona is only one of the 21 states where it is lawful to decline hiring individuals who use nicotine products.
Officials with U-Haul say that the policy change is meant to promote a healthier lifestyle for its workers, as well as a healthy corporate culture.
“We are deeply invested in the well-being of our Team Members,” stated Jessica Lopez, U-Haul Chief of Staff. “Nicotine products are addictive and pose a variety of serious health risks. This policy is a responsible step in fostering a culture of wellness at U-Haul, with the goal of helping our Team Members on their health journey.”
Aside from Arizona and Michigan, the policy will also be implemented in Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.
Workers who had previously been hired before the policy change will not be affected.
The nicotine-free hiring policy will go into effect on Feb. 1st.
