LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The State of Michigan is currently exploring options for allowing a third gender selection on driver’s licenses.
Gender-neutral ID’s are already implemented in 14 states, including Indiana in the Midwest region.
The change is meant to be more inclusive to transgender citizens, which officials say has been an ongoing request. The change is also intended to help reduce harassment and assault against these citizens.
Officials say that having an ID that doesn’t match the carriers gender can lead to these issues.
In the process of helping to be more inclusive, the Secretary of State office has already made it easier and faster to change a gender on an ID. Now, citizens need only fill out a form and pay a fee to make the change.
It is currently unknown what the third option would be. An official change is expected by 2021.
