BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Police are saying that multiple passengers were injured when a van transporting prisoners crashed on I-94.
The incident happened around 2 p.m. Tuesday on a stretch of highway in Charleston Township, near Galesburg.
The van, which is owned by a private company called U.S. Corrections, was traveling westbound on I-94 when it collided with another vehicle, shutting down part of the road.
Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller says seven people were injured, some of those being the inmates that were being transported to a correctional facility in Illinois. He adds that the extent of the injuries “could have been a lot worse” but details were not released.
Ambulances and police from multiple departments including Battle Creek and Calhoun County were called in to assist the injured passengers who were transported to local hospitals and monitored by police.
Crews on scene reported that van suffered severe damage from the crash.
Along the affected lanes of interstate 94, traffic was backed up more than a mile before the crash zone.
