HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — U.S. Representative Justin Amash — who broke from the Republican Party over his concerns about President Trump’s ethics — is now running to retain his office as an independent. In the last quarter of 2019, he set a personal fundraising record, according to FEC filings.
The most recent campaign fundraising report indicates his is far ahead of his challangers, both Republicans and Democrats, having raised $595,000 in 2019’s final quarter. That’s a career best for Amash, first elected to Congress in 2010.
He’s continued using social media to critique his former fellow Republicans, tweeting yesterday that he “had hoped a few more Republicans in Congress would stand on principle, I had always expected most would ignore impeachable conduct even if it stared them in the face. Most members of Congress are quick to abandon their stated principles when power is at stake.”
Amash took to Twitter again to thank donors for his record-setting quarter adding, “I’m especially grateful to the people of my district, who have been so supportive and kind. Humbled and honored to represent you as an independent. Thank you for believing.”
His challengers include Republicans Peter Meijer, Lynn Afendoulis, Joe Farrington, Andrew Jackson Willis, Joel Langlois Tom Norton, and Emily Rafi; and Democrats Amanda Le’Anne Brunzell, Nick Colvin, and Hillary Scholten. that field will narrow after the August primary election.
