BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — UPDATE: Health officials have determined that a military base in Calhoun County will not be used to house coronavirus patients.
Previously, Fort Custer was under consideration as a quarantine area for potential cases of novel coronavirus, or “2019-nCoV.” It was one of 11 outposts in the country selected as a possible location.
It was selected as a possible backup zone in case more lodging for patients was needed.
However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that is satisfied with the current plan, and will not be utilizing Fort Custer.
Officials maintain that the chances of the virus spreading in Michigan is low. Five possible cases had been previously reported in Michigan, but all five have been confirmed as unaffected.
“We at MDHHS recognize the potential threat associated with this virus and are working to identify any suspect cases in Michigan along with our local health partners,” said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, MDHHS chief medical executive and chief deputy for health.
The fifth and most recent suspected case to be cleared was for a citizen in Oakland County, who had traveled to China where the virus originated.
Patients with confirmed infection have reportedly had mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms of:
- Fever
- Cough
- Shortness of breath
The CDC believes symptoms may appear from anywhere between two and 14 days after exposure. Health officials say that proper hand washing and practicing good hygiene are good ways to avoid getting sick.
