LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — State leaders are trying to figure how to address the shortage of teachers in Michigan.
A new report released this week shows many districts across the great lake state struggling to fill classrooms with eligible teachers.
The findings were compiled by the group Public Policy Associates, which highlights student loan debt and relatively low pay as possible culprits for the lack of educators entering the job field.
Director for Education Policy Dan Quinn says one solution is programs that help young teachers, as well as giving them greater control over curriculums.
The report titled, “Examining Michigan’s Education Workforce: How to Address the Talent Shortage Facing Michigan’s Schools,” summarizes findings from the summits across three key areas:
- Recruiting more aspiring educators
- Retaining our current educators
- Diversifying the profession
