GIRARD TOWNSHIP, MI. – (WTVB) – A Union City truck driver escaped with minor injuries on Monday morning after some apparent medical issues led to his semi crashing into some trees in Girard Township.
Branch County Sheriff Deputies drove upon the accident scene on Marshall Road just north of Bidwell Road right before 8:00 a.m.. Undersheriff Keith Eichler says the semi was smoking and 67-year-old Daniel Swan was trapped by trees.
Deputies managed to free him and found he had visible minor injuries. Swan was then taken to ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital. Life Care Ambulance, the Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Division and the Coldwater Fire Department also responded to the scene.
A Sheriff’s Department preliminary investigation shows Swan was traveling south on Marshall Road when he encountered internal medical issues and blacked out.
Swan lost control of the semi, left the road, drove through a small wooded area and up onto a very large rock pile. Deputies and a towing service were on scene for three hours while removing the wreckage from the small wooded area.
