SAGINAW, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — In an effort to deter the spread of illnesses such as the flu and coronavirus, several Catholic dioceses are encouraging their sick members to stay home from Mass.
In a letter written by The Most Rev. Robert D. Gruss, Bishop of Saginaw, it was explained that those who are sick can still livestream services in Saginaw online.
In the Western Michigan area, the Catholic Dioceses of Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids are both encouraging the same practice.
However, preventative measures can still be taken while attending Mass in person. Gruss recommends the following practices to avoid infection –
- During the sign of peace, bow your head to other attendees and say “peace be with you.”
- Wash your hands before and after Mass.
- Respect the decision of other attendees to not hold hands, shake hands or hug.
- Individuals can always choose to not participate in Communion from the Cup.
Gruss adds that other preventative measures may be implemented in the near future if they are deemed necessary.
Citizens can keep up with all news of the coronavirus by visiting the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) website.
